I. 서론

유럽과 북아메리카 지역에시 60여년 전에 시작된 공정무역 운동(Fair Trade movement)의 규모와 영향력은 최근 10여년간에 걸쳐 급격한 성장세를 보이고 있다. 2007년 페어트레이드(Fairtrade)²⁾ 의 무역 규모는 전세계적으로 23억 유로(한화 약 4조 3친억)에 달 하였다. 이는 전년대비 47%，10년 전과 비교하면 약 70배의 성장을 의미하는 것으로, 페어트레이드의 혜택은 전세계 약 750 만 명의 농민과 노동자, 그 가족들에게 미치고 있는 것으로 추산된다(FLO 2008).
