1. 배경

수단 내 주혈흡충증 감염률은 말라리아 다음으로 심각하나 국제사회로부터 충분한 관심과 지원을 받지 못하고 있다. 수단 정부는 주혈흡충증 퇴치를 위하여 국가 주혈흡충 관리 프로그램(National Schistosomiasis Control Programme, NSCP)를 운영하고는 있으나 예산 부족 등으로 사업영향이 미치지 않는 지역이 여전히 많다.

이에 수단 정부는 2008년 ‘주혈흡충 퇴치사업’ 지원을 한국국제협력단(KOICA)에 요청하여, KOICA는 국제빈곤퇴치기여금 지원사업의 일환으로 수단 화이트 나일(White Nile)주 Al Jabalain 지역에서 ‘수단 주혈흡충 퇴치 사업(2009-2011/12억 원)’을 수행하였다.
