1. Burns 미국무부 정무차관보 주재국 방문

■ Nicholas Burns 미국무부정무차관보는연호방문차 1.22(일) 스리랑카에도착한이후Mahinda Rajapaksa 대통령, Mangala Samaraweera 외교부장관, Ranil Wickremesinghe 야당지도자 및 당지를 방문중인 Erik Solheim 노르웨이 국제개발장관 등과 면담함.

■ Mahinda Rajapaksa 대통령은 Burns 차관보에게 스리랑카 정부의 평화협상 재개 노력, 특히 지난 1.19 전체 정당회의에서 만장일치로 조속한 회담재개에 합의한 점 등을 설명하고 미국정부가 LTTE로 하여금 폭력을 포기하고 협상에 임하도록 압력을 행사해 줄 것을 요청함.

– Burns 차관보는 LTTE측이 최근의 폭력 급증 이유로 스리랑카 정부하 준군사조직(paramilitaries) 활동을 주장하고 있는 점을 고려 스리랑카 정부가 그러한 조직을 지원하지 않고 있음을 확실히 하는 것이 중요하다고 강조함.
